Apple touts UK-exclusive Apple Wallet bank balance feature, similar feature coming to the US in the future

Apple has revealed that its UK-exclusive bank balance feature for iPhone, which allows users to see their latest transactions and balances from the Wallet app, will expand to users in the US “in the future.”

In a new post to the Apple Newsroom on Thursday, which highlights the feature, available only for Apple Pay users in the U.K., Apple touts how iPhone users in the country are able to connect their eligible debit and credit cards in Wallet, and view and access their up-to-date debit card balance with a tap.

“By enabling users to conveniently access their most useful account information within Wallet and at the time of their purchase, they can make informed financial decisions and better understand and manage their spend,” said Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s VP of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet. “We look forward to working with UK partners under the Open Banking initiative to help users better their financial health, and provide more ways in which banks can deepen their relationships with customers.”

Closing the post, Apple says it is enabling a similar feature in the U.S. for Discover credit card users “in the future,” although no further details were shared.

How to see your bank balance in the Wallet app on iPhone

• Open the Wallet app on an iPhone running iOS 17.1 and add a bank card to the app
• Should the card be issued from a supporting bank, tap the card on-screen and select Get Started
• Tap Continue to connect your account to Wallet, view the permissions prompt and select Continue a second time
• When automatically redirected to your banks app, grand Wallet permission to access your account details

Once the permissions have been accepted, you will be automatically taken back to the Wallet app where your balance will be shown when tapping the card on-screen.

To view transactions, debits, deposits and balances, users need to simply select the card on-screen where information will appear. As the feature uses the Open Banking API, the Wallet app will display a history of transactions, including those dating back up to two years.
