Apple reportedly planning all-new OLED MacBook to sit between MacBook Air and MacBook Pro

Apple could significantly expand its MacBook lineup in the coming years, with a new report suggesting the company is exploring an entirely new OLED notebook positioned between the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro.
According to research firm Omdia, cited by MacRumors, Apple is currently expected to introduce a 13.8-inch OLED MacBook around 2029. Rather than simply becoming an OLED version of the MacBook Air, the machine is reportedly being considered as a separate product category.
The move could give Apple a new middle ground in its notebook range. The MacBook Air would remain the mainstream option, while the MacBook Pro would continue to target customers needing higher performance. A new model between the two could offer premium display technology and other higher-end features without moving all the way into MacBook Pro territory.
Omdia expects the 13.8-inch model to use a single-stack hybrid OLED panel, differentiating it from the more advanced tandem OLED technology reportedly planned for Apple’s upcoming high-end MacBooks. The display could also incorporate LTPO+ technology, integrated touch sensing, an under-panel camera and a color filter incorporated into the OLED encapsulation layer.
There have already been signs that Apple is investigating a display of this size. Earlier reports suggested the company had approached Samsung Display, LG Display and BOE for information relating to 13.8-inch OLED MacBook panels, although those discussions were previously assumed to be connected to a future MacBook Air.
The latest roadmap instead suggests Apple could keep the MacBook Air on LCD technology through 2030, while using the new 13.8-inch machine to bring OLED further down its notebook lineup. That would represent a notable change from earlier expectations that the MacBook Air itself would eventually make the switch.
Apple is simultaneously preparing major changes elsewhere in the Mac lineup. The Apple Post previously reported that the company is planning an extensive series of Mac updates, including redesigned high-end MacBooks with OLED displays.
With the rumored 13.8-inch model still potentially around three years away, Apple’s plans could change considerably before launch.
