Apple’s first foldable iPhone may only be the beginning of the company’s plans for folding devices, with a newly leaked roadmap pointing to a substantially larger model arriving in 2028.
The device is reportedly being developed with a folding display measuring around 9.2 inches, which would make it considerably larger than the roughly 7.8-inch internal screen expected on Apple’s first foldable iPhone.
As reported by 9to5Mac, the information comes from a leaked Apple product roadmap via Bloomberg covering several future generations of iPhone.
The larger model is reportedly planned for the second half of 2028. At 9.2 inches when unfolded, the device could push Apple’s foldable lineup much closer to the territory occupied by the iPad mini, potentially creating a device designed as much for larger-screen productivity and entertainment as conventional smartphone use.
Apple is expected to make its first move into foldables much sooner. The Apple Post recently published a full recap of everything expected from Apple’s first foldable iPhone, which is rumored to launch under the iPhone Ultra name with a book-style design, A20 Pro chip and a price exceeding $2,000.
That first-generation model is expected to use a smaller outer display of around 5.5 inches before opening to reveal its larger internal screen. Apple has reportedly concentrated heavily on reducing the display crease and producing an unusually thin folding design.
The roadmap suggests Apple could then use what it learns from its first foldable to broaden the lineup rather than treating the form factor as a one-off experiment.
A larger 9.2-inch model would also give Apple considerably more room to differentiate future foldables from its conventional Pro iPhones, particularly if iOS continues gaining interfaces designed to adapt dynamically to larger folding displays.
The report arrives just days before Apple’s September 9 event, where its first foldable is expected to make its debut. The Apple Post reported today that early iPhone Ultra production has reportedly been limited to only a few hundred units per day as suppliers work to meet Apple’s manufacturing requirements.
If the leaked roadmap proves accurate, Apple’s entry into foldable smartphones this year could ultimately develop into a much broader family of folding iPhones over the next several years.
