I appears that the iPhone is not the only device in Apples lineup this year that will receive the now infamous square hump.
Citing a Chinese supply chain insider, Japanese news source Mac Otakara claims Apple’s next-generation iPad Pro could feature a rear triple-lens camera system, much like that rumoured to be released with the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Max next month.
We haven’t yet heard any other reports suggesting Apple will adopt a triple-lens camera system on the 2019 iPad Pro, so we recommend taking this claim with caution however, the Japanese publication has a decent track record in predicting Apple’s hardware moves, often gleaning information from third-party case makers.
Currently, the iPad Pro features a single 12MP camera, so if the claims are true the jump from a single-lens to triple-lens array will be a huge upgrade compared to the current-generation device which launched last October.
It’s no secret that Apple is heavily investing in AR, so it may not be too far fetched to imagine that Apple is wanting to beef up its devices camera capabilities to support AR projects in the future. Currently the iPad does not support portrait mode like the ones that can be taken on the iPhone, so this would also be a new feature if the iPad were to gain a triple lens camera.
Since its introduction in 2018, Apple hasn’t updated the Face ID-equipped iPad Pro line, while the most recent 9.7-inch iPad variant saw release in March 2018. Both models are due for a refresh, with an all-new 10.2 model expected to be released in October.
