Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro is now official, and this year’s upgrade is much more than a routine chip change. The new Pro brings meaningful changes to the camera, performance, battery life and front of the device, giving iPhone 17 Pro owners several reasons to look closely before pre-orders open.
The biggest headline change is the camera. iPhone 18 Pro introduces Apple’s first variable-aperture 48MP Fusion Main camera, allowing the camera to physically adjust its aperture using six blades. That gives photographers greater control over depth of field while also helping the camera adapt to different lighting conditions.
Apple has also introduced new Pro camera controls, giving users direct access to aperture, shutter speed and white balance. The updated sensor and computational imaging system are designed to improve low-light images and preserve more detail across a scene.

iPhone 18 Pro gets the A20 Pro chip

Apple has paired the processor with a next-generation vapor chamber with three times the surface area of the cooling system used in iPhone 17 Pro. The company says the combination can deliver up to 40% better sustained performance than the previous generation.
That matters most during demanding workloads such as gaming, video editing and AI processing, where keeping performance high for longer can be more useful than a short benchmark boost.
A20 Pro also brings a six-core CPU, seven-core GPU and Dual 16-core Neural Engine, while memory bandwidth has increased by 50% compared with A19 Pro. Apple says graphics performance can be up to 40% faster.
The Dynamic Island is smaller
One of the most immediately noticeable differences is at the top of the display.
Apple has made the Dynamic Island smaller on iPhone 18 Pro for the first time since the feature debuted with iPhone 14 Pro.
It still houses Face ID and remains a major part of the iOS interface, but takes up less space on the display. Apple has also made better use of the smaller area, allowing as many as three Live Activities to appear simultaneously.
It is not a complete redesign of the front of the iPhone, but it is a change iPhone 17 Pro owners are likely to notice immediately.
Battery life takes another step forward
Battery life could be one of the more compelling reasons to upgrade, particularly for iPhone 17 Pro Max owners who regularly push their phone through a full day.
Apple rates iPhone 18 Pro for up to 36 hours of video playback on eSIM-only models, while iPhone 18 Pro Max reaches as much as 45 hours.
Apple says the Pro Max receives the largest battery-life increase it has ever delivered on an iPhone.
The improvement comes from several changes working together rather than one enormous battery upgrade. A20 Pro is more efficient, Apple’s new C2 modem uses less power and eSIM-only models can use space previously occupied by physical SIM hardware for additional battery capacity.
Charging is faster as well. Apple says iPhone 18 Pro can reach around 50% charge in approximately 15 minutes with suitable wired charging equipment.
Four colors, including burgundy
Apple has changed the Pro color lineup again this year.
iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are available in black, silver, glacier and an all-new burgundy finish.
Black makes its return after disappearing from the iPhone 17 Pro generation, while burgundy is the standout new option. The final selection also settles months of conflicting leaks that variously pointed towards Dark Cherry, Sky Blue, silver and black.
How much does iPhone 18 Pro cost?
There is one fairly significant downside to this year’s upgrade: it costs more.
iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 in the United States, while iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299. That makes both models $100 more expensive than their predecessors.
Both start with 256GB of storage and are also available with 512GB, 1TB and 2TB.
Apple is offering trade-in and carrier promotions that could reduce the cost for existing iPhone owners, but anyone upgrading directly from an iPhone 17 Pro will still need to decide whether the changes justify moving to another Pro model after only a year.
When can you buy iPhone 18 Pro?
iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max pre-orders open at 5 a.m. Pacific Time on Saturday, September 12.
Apple has unusually chosen a Saturday for this year’s pre-order launch rather than the Friday traditionally used for new iPhones.
Both models will then be released on Friday, September 18, when deliveries begin and the phones become available in Apple Stores.
Should iPhone 17 Pro owners upgrade?
For most iPhone 17 Pro owners, the camera is probably the best place to start.
Variable aperture is a genuine hardware change rather than another purely computational camera feature. Anyone who regularly shoots photos or video on their iPhone could get considerably more from the additional control, particularly when combined with Apple’s new Pro controls.
Performance is a slightly different story. A20 Pro is substantially more powerful and the redesigned cooling system should allow the iPhone to maintain that performance for longer, but an iPhone 17 Pro is hardly slow. The difference is likely to matter much more to people gaming, editing video or making heavy use of on-device AI than someone primarily using their iPhone for everyday apps.
Battery life strengthens the argument, particularly on the Pro Max, while the smaller Dynamic Island is a welcome visual change rather than a reason to spend $1,199 on its own.
For anyone perfectly happy with the camera, performance and battery life of their iPhone 17 Pro, there is little urgency to replace a one-year-old phone.
But this is also not one of those Pro upgrades where almost everything important happens inside the chip. Between variable aperture, the smaller Dynamic Island, A20 Pro, redesigned cooling and improved battery life, there are changes iPhone 17 Pro owners will actually be able to see and use.
