iOS 27 introduces new Siri animation and swipe-to-ask gesture

Apple has officially confirmed several major changes coming to Siri in iOS 27, including a redesigned interface that moves the assistant into the Dynamic Island on supported iPhone models.
With iOS 27, Siri no longer lights up the edges of the display when activated. Instead, a new animation appears directly within the Dynamic Island, giving the assistant a more integrated look that takes advantage of modern iPhone hardware.
Apple has also introduced a new way to interact with Siri. Users can now swipe down on the Dynamic Island to instantly begin a search or start a conversation with Siri by typing. Voice interactions remain available through “Hey Siri” and the side button for more detailed requests and spoken responses.
Another new feature is “Write with Siri,” which helps users draft emails, messages, and other text. Apple says Siri can adapt its writing suggestions based on how users communicate with different people. For example, messages to a colleague can be written in a more professional tone, while conversations with friends can remain casual and conversational.

The announcement confirms details that were previously reported by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman ahead of WWDC26. Last week, Gurman revealed mockups based on information obtained from sources familiar with Apple’s plans, showing a Siri experience centred around the Dynamic Island, along with the new typing gesture and writing tools.
The Siri changes form part of a much broader update in iOS 27. Apple has introduced its new Liquid Glass design language across the operating system, bringing a refreshed look to apps, controls, menus, and navigation. The update also includes Siri AI, live translation across calls and messages, a redesigned Phone app, updates to Messages, Photos, Music, Maps, Wallet, CarPlay, and Apple Games, along with hundreds of smaller improvements focused on performance, battery life, accessibility, and everyday usability.
Apple says iOS 27 will be available as a free software update later this year, with a developer beta available now and a public beta expected next month. Siri AI will launch in English later this year, with additional languages to follow.
