iPhone 11R: What to expect from Apple’s updated iPhone XR
Apple is set to unveil its predecessor to the iPhone XR in September, and rumors are suggesting the device – named the iPhone 11R – will pack huge improvements over the current-generation device.
Apple’s forthcoming iPhone 11R, expected to launch alongside the iPhone 11 (predecessor to the iPhone XS) and iPhone 11 Max (predecessor to the iPhone XS Max), will be a lower-cost alternative to the flagship iPhone 11 handsets, with Apple rumored to add new color options, improved performance, a large camera upgrade, and more.
iPhone 11R: Design
Like the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Max, the overall design of the new iPhone 11R is expected to remain largely unchanged compared to the current-generation model, with the exception of a square rear camera housing which will be home to an added camera lens, an LED flash and rear microphone.
Additionally, based on supply chain leaks – including pieces of broken glass allegedly from the upcoming devices – the iPhone 11 will be available in two new colors: Green and Lavender which supposedly replace Coral and Blue from Apple’s iPhone XR lineup, leaving us to believe the iPhone 11R will be available in Green, Lavender, Yellow, White, Black and (PRODUCT)RED.
The rumored design of the iPhone 11R will closely tie-in with the proposed iPhone 11 aesthetic, with both models using a color-coordinated rear “bump”, a design referred to as “ugly” and “obtrusive” by some Apple followers.
iPhone 11R: Camera
A two-lens rear camera system has long been rumored to be one of the main features on the upcoming iPhone 11R, with the device believed to feature both a wide-angle lens and a telephoto lens, much like that found on the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max.
One of the big improvements the iPhone 11R will offer above the current-generation iPhone XR is that customers can benefit from “real” Portrait Mode. – When the iPhone XR launched, Apple boasted how users could take blurred-background images much like that offered to users of the iPhone X, iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max which feature two rear cameras.
To compensate for the missing lens on the iPhone XR, Apple used software to recreate Portrait Mode, although it hasn’t always worked perfectly. A two-lens camera system will solve this, allowing Apple to implement true Portrait Mode, and additionally allow for greater AR experiences.
Reports have also suggested the new iPhone 11R will offer front-facing slow-mo video recording.
iPhone 11R: Internals
Apple isn’t expected to add 5G cellular compatibility to the iPhone until 2020 at the earliest, meaning the device will lag behind its Android competitors who already offer 5G connectivity on their devices. The iPhone 11R will likely offer battery improvements over the previous-generation iPhone XR and may possibly include a new Apple-designed A13 chip.
iPhone 11R: Rumors
Similarly to the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Max, the iPhone 11R is expected to see Apple introduce a new bilateral charging feature, similar to that found on Samsung’s Galaxy S10, which would allow a user to rest any Qi-enabled device or accessory, such as another iPhone or the wireless charging AirPods case on the back of the device to wirelessly transfer power – ultimately turning the rear of the iPhone into a mini, transportable wireless charging pad. – The Apple Post has shared concepts of “PowerDrop”, envisioning the new iPhone-to-iPhone charging system.
The devices may support Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax), offer a 4×4 MIMO antenna design, allowing for faster LTE speeds.
An official name for the new device is yet unconfirmed however, Apple could follow-on its roman numeral naming scheme by calling the devices the iPhone XI R, but for simplicity we’re referring to the device as the iPhone 11R.
