Apple has reportedly fired several employees working on the App Store in China for accepting bribes from mobile game developers, with it understood that the rogue employees had the power to feature App Store apps to get them more views, a privilege that was likely misused.
According to a report from The Information, Apple has fired at least five employees following an internal probe into business misconduct. During the probe, Apple found infractions such as “unsanctioned contact with mobile game developers or consultants working on their behalf,” the report says, citing people with direct knowledge of the situation.
“The employees swept up in the investigations worked across multiple departments that help developers get their apps approved to be listed in the store, give them advice on how to increase revenue from their apps, and decide which apps to feature on the App Store’s prominent home pages. Such placements can have an outsized impact on an app’s success,” the report says.
In response to the report, Apple has said it expects its employees worldwide to “abide by its very strong ethics and business conduct policies.” “We thoroughly investigate reports of improper conduct and when appropriate will not hesitate to take immediate action up to and including termination.”
