Why your iPhone battery may be worse after installing iOS 27

If your iPhone battery suddenly seems worse after installing iOS 27 on Monday, it may be worth waiting a few days before deciding the update has damaged your battery life.
Major iOS updates can temporarily increase battery consumption because an iPhone continues doing work after the installation screen has disappeared. Apple specifically notes that tasks related to a recent software update can continue in the background and affect both battery life and thermal performance for a while.
That background work can make an iPhone feel warmer than usual and cause the battery percentage to fall more quickly. Apple advises users who notice worse battery life after updating to wait a few days and check again once those processes have finished.
Your iPhone can tell you if the update is still working
On recent versions of iOS, the Battery section in Settings can show an “Ongoing iOS Update” insight when software-update tasks are still being completed in the background. If that appears after installing iOS 27, unusually high battery use may simply be temporary.
You can check by opening Settings and tapping Battery. The same screen shows daily usage and identifies apps and system activities consuming the most power, making it useful for separating an update-related issue from an app that has suddenly become unusually active.
There is another factor to consider on release day: people tend to use their iPhone more after installing a major update. Trying new features, downloading updated apps, exploring settings and spending longer with the screen active can all make first-day battery comparisons misleading.
When should you start worrying?
If battery life remains substantially worse several days after installing iOS 27 and there is no longer an ongoing update message, it is worth checking Battery settings for unusual app activity. Battery Health can also help identify whether an aging battery rather than iOS itself is contributing to shorter runtime.
Low Power Mode can reduce power consumption in the meantime, while supported iPhones can use Adaptive Power to make adjustments on days when unusually high energy use is predicted.
Apple will release iOS 27 on Monday, September 14. The update includes significant changes across the operating system, and users planning to install immediately should not be surprised if their first few hours of battery performance are not representative of how the iPhone behaves once background work is complete.
For anyone still deciding whether to update immediately, the new features coming with iOS 27 range from Siri and Apple Intelligence improvements to changes across Photos, Maps, Safari and more.
