Apple has officially entered the foldable smartphone market with iPhone Duo, an entirely new iPhone that opens to reveal the largest display Apple has ever fitted to one of its smartphones.
When closed, iPhone Duo uses a 5.4-inch outer Super Retina XDR display designed for conventional one-handed use. Opening the device reveals a 7.6-inch inner display that Apple says is 50 percent larger than the screen on iPhone 18 Pro Max, creating considerably more room for apps, video, games and multitasking.
The two displays share the same aspect ratio, helping content transition naturally as the device is opened and closed. Both support ProMotion, Always On and peak outdoor brightness of 3,000 nits, while the inner display uses a nano-texture finish intended to reduce reflections and make the crease less noticeable.
Apple has built iPhone Duo from grade 5 titanium and developed a precision hinge containing more than 100 components. The company has also reinforced the folding display with multiple layers, high-strength glass, a titanium plate and custom adhesives designed to allow the layers to move as the phone folds.
Unlike Apple’s recent Face ID-equipped flagship iPhones, iPhone Duo uses Touch ID integrated into the side button. It can also be unlocked using an Apple Watch.
Inside is Apple’s new A20 Pro chip alongside a custom vapor chamber and dual-battery architecture. Apple says the phone can deliver up to 31 hours of video playback using the inner screen or up to 44 hours using the outer display.
The camera system includes a 48-megapixel Fusion Main camera with an optical-quality 2x option and a 48-megapixel Fusion Ultra Wide camera. The folding design also enables users to preview rear-camera selfies on the outer display, show subjects a live preview while taking their picture and prop the phone up without a tripod.
iOS 27 has been adapted specifically for the new form factor. iPhone Duo introduces Split View multitasking on iPhone, allowing two apps to run alongside one another, while users can save app pairs or open two windows from the same app. StandBy can also operate when the device is not connected to power.
Apple Pencil support is coming later this year, with Apple Pencil with USB-C working across both displays.
iPhone Duo will be sold in star white and night sky with 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB storage options. Prices start at $1,999 in the United States. Pre-orders open Friday, October 16, ahead of availability beginning Friday, October 23.
