Apple has made a notable change to biometric authentication on its first foldable iPhone, with iPhone Duo using Touch ID instead of Face ID.
The fingerprint sensor is integrated directly into the side button, allowing users to authenticate whether the device is open or closed without requiring additional hardware around either display.
Apple says iPhone Duo can also be unlocked using an Apple Watch, providing another authentication option for users wearing a compatible watch.
The decision marks a departure from Apple’s flagship iPhone lineup, where Face ID has been the primary biometric authentication system for years.
iPhone Duo’s unusual internal design places particular emphasis on conserving space. The device has two displays, a precision folding hinge, one battery on each side and a custom vapor chamber connected to the A20 Pro chip.
The inner 7.6-inch display does include a FaceTime camera hidden beneath the screen when it is not being used, but Apple has opted for Touch ID rather than building its Face ID authentication system into the foldable design.
The side of the device also includes Camera Control, which can launch the camera and access Apple’s new Siri Camera mode. That feature allows Siri to use what the camera can see when answering questions or taking actions.
iPhone Duo will be available for pre-order on October 16 before launching on October 23. Prices start at $1,999 in the United States.
