Apple u-turns on UNiDAYS verification requirement for Apple Education Store purchases in the US

Apple has seemingly u-turned and dropped the newly introduced requirement for UNiDAYS verification for Apple Education Store purchases in the US after updating its policy earlier this week to require students, teachers, and other education workers in the US to verify their affiliation with an educational institution through UNiDAYS to receive discounts through the Apple Education Store, just like the verification requirement in other countries around the world, including India and the United Kingdom.

First spotted by users on Reddit earlier today, the change in policy reverts back to the relaxed approach to education discounts that leaves the door wide open for anyone in the US to access the educational discounts, however, Apple has limits on the products that can be purchased through the Apple Education Store at a discounted price.

Customers are limited to one iMac/Mac Pro, Mac mini or MacBook Air/MacBook Pro purchase per year, with up to two iPads and two accessories a year available at the discounted rate.

It is unclear why Apple has dropped the tighter screening just days after launching the new process.

9to5Mac reports that some faculty and staff complained after the new policy was introduced on Wednesday after being unable to verify their affiliation with their educational institutions, so Apple may decide to temporarily pause the UNiDAYS rollout until these issues are resolved.
