iPhone 12 saw ‘largest number of upgraders’ ever, says Apple
Speaking today after Apple reported its earnings for the first fiscal quarter of 2021, company CEO Tim Cook has said the period saw “the largest number of upgraders that we’ve ever seen in a quarter,” with now more than 1 billion iPhones being used around the world, up from 900 million in 2019.
Cook praised the iPhone 12 family for the 17 percent year over year growth in the iPhone category, with Apple seeing strong demand for the handsets launched late last year that bring new 5G capabilities, all-new design, camera improvements and OLED displays across the board.
Q1 2021 saw increased numbers of new customers switching from Android, saying “both switchers and upgraders increased on a YoY basis,” with Apple CFO Luca Maestri commenting on the success of the higher-priced iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max, which Apple is reportedly boosting production of to meet steady consumer demand.
Apple no longer provides specific device sales data, but the company said it saw “double-digit growth in each product category” during the quarter.
