iPhone 17 Pro owners upgrading to the new iPhone 18 Pro may not need to buy another case, with Apple keeping the exterior dimensions of its latest Pro models exactly the same as last year’s devices.
Apple lists both the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro at 5.91 inches tall, 2.83 inches wide and 0.34 inches deep, or 150.0 mm by 71.9 mm by 8.75 mm. The same is true of the larger models, with the iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone 18 Pro Max both measuring 6.43 inches by 3.07 inches by 0.34 inches.
That means most conventional iPhone 17 Pro cases should physically fit the iPhone 18 Pro, while iPhone 17 Pro Max cases should likewise fit the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Apple has also retained the familiar Action button, Camera Control, side and volume buttons, USB-C connection and full-width rear camera platform.
The matching measurements can be confirmed in Apple’s official iPhone 18 Pro technical specifications. Apple does not, however, advertise its own iPhone 17 Pro cases as officially compatible with the newer models, so particularly tight-fitting or specialized cases may still be worth checking before reuse.
The compatibility is not entirely unexpected. The Apple Post reported last month that OtterBox packaging had appeared indicating compatibility across both generations, providing an early clue that Apple would preserve the same overall dimensions.
Cases with broad camera openings and conventional button cutouts are the safest candidates for reuse. Designs with closely molded camera rings, integrated lens protectors or unusually precise button covers could be more sensitive to smaller component-level differences that are not reflected in the overall height, width and depth figures.
Although the chassis dimensions are unchanged, the iPhone 18 Pro itself is not simply a repeat of last year’s model. Apple has introduced the A20 Pro chip, a new variable-aperture 48MP Fusion Main camera, redesigned cooling, improved battery life and a smaller Dynamic Island.

For iPhone 17 Pro owners who do make the move, being able to keep an existing case could at least remove one extra accessory from the upgrade bill. Anyone using a particularly specialized case should still check its manufacturer’s compatibility guidance before relying on it with the new phone.
