Apple offering new in-store service for owners of AirPods

Apple has quietly revealed in an updated Apple Support document that it will now offer a new in-store service for owners of AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max.
With the release of AirPods firmware version 5E133 earlier this week, which brought bug fixes and other improvements to the AirPods 2, AirPods 3, AirPods Pro, AirPods Pro 2, and AirPods Max, Apple has shared that it will now offer in-store firmware version upgrades for AirPods users who do not own another Apple device and therefor are unable to update their AirPods automatically to the latest firmware version.
Firmware version upgrades for AirPods require a paired Apple device for the upgrade to be installed through, leaving the small amount of users who have AirPods but don’t own another Apple device unable to upgrade their firmware version, as Apple doesn’t provide an upgrade manager to non-Apple devices.

However, beginning now, Apple says if users don’t have an Apple device nearby, they can set up an appointment at an Apple Store or with an Apple Authorized Service Provider to update the firmware version of their AirPods, allowing everyone to receive the latest updates as they become available.
The updated Apple Support document also clarifies how automatic firmware versions are installed to AirPods through an Apple device, saying that updates are installed when the AirPods are charging and are within range of an iPhone, iPad, or Mac that is connected to Wi-Fi.
