All three new iPhone models to feature 5G support in 2020, claims Kuo
Apple will equip all three 2020 iPhone models with 5G support according to renowned industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, an update to his earlier predictions that only Apple’s high-end iPhone models would receive 5G connectivity.
According to Kuo, Apple will release all three new iPhone models next year with 5G support, a decision based on the recent announcement that Apple will acquire Intel’s smartphone modem business in an acquisition valued at $1 billion, with around 2,200 Intel employees joining the team at Apple along with Intel’s intellectual property, 4G and 5G patent portfolio, equipment and leases.
The acquisition will mean Apple can allocate more resources to support 5G on more models sooner, and with Android devices priced as low as $350 expected to tout 5G support next year, Apple doesn’t want to be left behind and be shipping a range that isn’t entirely made up of 5G-equipped devices.
Kuo believes that the 5G iPhone models will support both mmWave and sub-6GHz bands. – This will allow the iPhone to interoperate well with the 5G cell towers installed across the United States.
Little is known about Apple’s 2020 iPhone line, though it will likely be comprised of three variants with 6.7-inch, 5.4-inch, and 6.1-inch screens, with all three models sporting OLED displays (unlike the current 2018 and 2019 lineups which will include an LCD ‘XR’ model).
