Apple Store evacuated after iPad battery explodes in Amsterdam
Emergency services were sent to an Apple Store in central Amsterdam at around 14:20pm on Sunday afternoon after an iPad battery reportedly overheated and exploded in-store, leaving “three people with breathing problems” according to firefighters.
The store was quickly evacuated due to the possibility of harmful vapors in the air from the “leaking battery pack”. Employees in the store reportedly moved the iPad into a sand container to prevent the device from igniting.
According to local media, a punctured battery may have been the cause of the explosion. – Apple hasn’t officially commented on the incident. In February a faulty iPhone battery caught fire leaving two Apple Store employees in hospital with suspected smoke inhalation at its flagship store located in Hong Kong’s International Finance Centre mall.
After an all-clear from the emergency services Apple re-opened the store and returned to business less than an hour later according to Dutch broadcaster AT5 and NH Nieuws.
