AirPods 5 vs. AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case: What does the extra $20 get you?

AirPods 5 start at $129 in the United States, but Apple is also selling a $149 version called AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case. With only $20 separating them, deciding which pair to order may not be as straightforward as choosing the cheaper option.
Importantly, the AirPods themselves share most of the headline features. Apple has made Active Noise Cancellation standard across the AirPods 5 lineup, alongside the new acoustic architecture, Adaptive EQ, Siri AI and Live Translation.
So unlike the previous generation, you are not paying an extra $20 to unlock noise cancellation. The differences come down to the charging case and a handful of additional conveniences.
Both AirPods 5 models have Active Noise Cancellation
This is probably the most important thing to know before choosing between them.
With AirPods 4, Apple sold separate versions with and without Active Noise Cancellation. AirPods 5 changes that strategy completely, giving every buyer ANC regardless of which charging case they choose.
Apple has improved its performance too. AirPods 5 can cancel up to 50% more external noise than AirPods 4 with ANC, according to Apple, despite retaining the open-ear design rather than switching to silicone ear tips.
That means the $129 model is not a stripped-back version when it comes to one of the biggest reasons to upgrade.
The $149 model adds wireless charging
The most obvious reason to spend another $20 is sitting in the name.
AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case can be placed on a compatible wireless charger instead of requiring a cable every time the case needs power.
If you already have wireless chargers around the house for your iPhone or other devices, this is likely to be the feature you notice most over the life of the AirPods.
The standard $129 AirPods 5 still use USB-C charging, so you are not giving up fast or convenient wired charging by choosing the cheaper model. You simply lose the option of putting the case down on a wireless charger.
The $149 version has another useful advantage
The more expensive configuration is not simply the same AirPods placed inside a different case.
Apple also reserves on-stem volume control for the $149 model.
That allows you to adjust the volume directly from the AirPods rather than taking out your iPhone or using an Apple Watch or another connected device.
It sounds like a relatively small difference, but it is exactly the sort of convenience feature that can become useful several times a day. If you tend to adjust your volume frequently, it may be worth more than the wireless charging itself.
Everything else is remarkably similar
Whichever model you choose, you are still getting the main AirPods 5 experience.
Both have Active Noise Cancellation, Apple’s redesigned acoustic architecture, Adaptive EQ and the same open-ear approach. Both also benefit from the intelligence features Apple is pushing heavily with this generation, including Siri AI and Live Translation.
That is what makes this comparison different from AirPods 4. There is no major audio feature locked behind the more expensive version.
Our complete AirPods 5 guide covers everything Apple has changed with the new generation, including the audio improvements, new controls and intelligence features.
Is the $149 AirPods 5 model worth the extra $20?
For most people, probably.
At $129, standard AirPods 5 are already very good value within Apple’s lineup. You get the same basic design, Active Noise Cancellation, upgraded audio and the headline software features without having to pay extra for ANC.
If you have no interest in wireless charging and rarely adjust volume directly from your earbuds, save the $20. You are not sacrificing the core AirPods 5 experience.
But $20 is a relatively small difference over the several years you are likely to own a pair of AirPods.
Wireless charging is useful every time the battery runs low, while on-stem volume controls remove one of those small annoyances that can otherwise mean reaching for another device.
For that reason, the $149 AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case are likely to be the better long-term buy for most people, particularly if you already use wireless chargers around the home.
AirPods 5 are available to pre-order now starting at $129, with both versions arriving in stores on Friday, September 18.
