Apple Watch Ultra 4 brings major step-counting upgrade with new S11 chip

Apple Watch Ultra 4 introduces a redesigned pedometer system that Apple says gives the device the most accurate step tracking of any smartwatch.
The upgrade combines new machine-learning algorithms with Apple’s S11 chip to improve everyday step counts as well as distance measurements during indoor walking and running workouts.
Apple has also added a dedicated Steps complication, allowing users to see their current step count directly on an Apple Watch face rather than opening another app or relying on a separate complication.
The company says it validated the new system using a 1,000-step accuracy test with video step counting, comparing its results against other leading smartwatches available during testing.
Although Apple Watch has tracked steps for years, Apple has traditionally placed greater emphasis on its Activity rings than on prominently displaying a daily step target. The new complication makes step data considerably easier to see at a glance.
The improved pedometer is part of a broader fitness upgrade in Apple Watch Ultra 4. Apple’s new Health Sensing System collects heart-rate data every five seconds and measures HRV more frequently, while Readiness combines health and activity information into a daily score.
For longer activities, Ultra 4 can provide up to 25 hours of tracking in Extended Workout mode. Max Extended Workout mode stretches that to as much as 45 hours for outdoor runs, walks and hikes while continuing to take GPS readings every second.
Apple Watch Ultra 4 is available to pre-order now, starting at $799, and launches on Friday, September 18.
