Apple supplier reportedly ending work on displays for rumored low-cost Vision headset

Apple’s long-rumored lower-cost Vision headset may have suffered another major setback, with a new report claiming one of the company’s key display suppliers is preparing to abandon work on the project.
Following the launch of Apple Vision Pro in early 2024, multiple reports suggested Apple was developing a more affordable headset designed to bring spatial computing to a wider audience. The device was expected to retain many of the core Vision Pro experience while reducing costs through changes to its display technology and overall design.
However, reports over the past year have suggested Apple’s priorities have shifted. Development of a next-generation Apple Vision Pro was reportedly paused as engineers were reassigned to other projects, including Siri and artificial intelligence initiatives. Apple was also said to have halted work on a lighter, lower-cost headset, often referred to as the “Apple Vision Air,” in order to focus on developing AI-powered smart glasses.
Now, a new report from The Elec claims Apple supplier Samsung Display is preparing to wind down its work on display panels intended for the cheaper headset. According to the report, the internal project, known as “G-VR,” is expected to be formally terminated by September, marking another indication that the device is no longer moving forward.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman first reported in October 2025 that Apple had paused development of a lighter and less expensive Vision headset so it could accelerate work on smart glasses designed to compete with Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses. Gurman later reported in May 2026 that the lower-cost headset had been canceled altogether.
While Apple has never publicly acknowledged plans for a cheaper Vision headset, the latest report appears to support claims that the company has shifted its long-term strategy away from expanding the Vision product line and toward wearable AI devices.
