First MicroLED Apple Watch on track to launch in late 2025, analyst says
Apple is on track to launch its first-ever MicroLED Apple Watch in late 2025, according to analyst Jeff Pu, with rumors suggesting that the new technology will come first to the Apple Watch Ultra, bringing a 2.12-inch increase in screen size before expanding to the regular Apple Watch in the years after.
In a research note obtained by MacRumors, the Haitong International Securities analyst claims that work on the new display technology is well underway, with images on the new wearable expected to look as if they are “painted” atop the glass.
MicroLED technology can provide higher pixel density, better color accuracy, and improved brightness compared to traditional OLED displays. This can result in a crisper and more vibrant display, which is important for a small device like a smartwatch where every pixel matters.
MicroLED displays can be thinner and lighter than traditional OLED displays, allowing for a more compact design for the Apple Watch, the display technology also are known for their energy efficiency. Since the Apple Watch relies on a battery, using a MicroLED display could lead to longer battery life or more efficient power consumption, which is a key consideration for wearable devices.
It’s worth noting that while MicroLED technology offers several advantages, there are also challenges to overcome, such as manufacturing complexity and cost. Apple’s decision to implement MicroLED in its products would depend on its ability to address these challenges.
