You can now request to be verified on Twitter – here’s how to apply
Twitter on Thursday reopened its public verification program, which allows users to submit a request to be verified and show the highly sought-after blue checkmark badge on their profile. Here’s everything you need to know.
Twitter announced its plans to bring back public account verification requests late last year, saying it would begin accepting requests for notable accounts in 2021 that belong to government officials; companies, brands and nonprofit organizations; news; entertainment; sports; and activists, organizers and other influential individuals.
Sticking to its promise, Twitter has today opened up its public application process, which is available on the Account Settings page on the web and in-app. The process includes Twitter asking applicants to select a category for their verified status and confirming their identity via links and other supporting materials.
How To Apply for Twitter Verification
In this instance, we’ll look at how to apply for verification using the Twitter app for iPhone, but the process is similar online.
- Open the Twitter app and tap the side menu
- Select ‘Settings and privacy’ and tap on the ‘Account’ button
- You will then see a ‘Request verification’ button – tap that
Twitter says over the next few weeks, everyone on the platform will start to see the new verification application directly in the Account Settings tab, with the form rolling out gradually starting today.
You will need to confirm your identity via links and other supporting materials. Twitter notes that accounts must be active with a profile name, and a profile image, have a confirmed email address or phone number, must not have had a 12-hour or 7-day lockout for violating the Twitter Rules in the past six months, and must have been logged into in the last six months.
Once you submit your application, you can expect an emailed response from Twitter within a few days, but this could take up to a few weeks depending on how many open applications are in the queue. If your application is approved, you’ll see the blue badge automatically on your profile. If you are rejected, you can reapply 30 days after receiving the decision on the application.
