Apple rumored to be ‘prototyping’ new AirPower charging mat
Apple has engineers working on its infamous AirPower charging mat, according to a rumor shared by YouTuber Jon Prosser who claims teams are currently at the prototyping stage of an updated version of the wireless charger.
Apple announced its AirPower project was cancelled last March, at the time saying the company wasn’t able to meet its high standards for hardware following numerous reports from industry sources claiming engineers were battling with overheating issues during testing.
Apple’s objective for AirPower was simple: to create a wireless charging pad on which customers could simultaneously charge three products – iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods wireless charging case – at once.
With the exception of what was said to be a leaked marketing video for the unreleased AirPower charging mat, we haven’t seen much news surrounding the abandoned project since.
Leading Apple-insider Ming-Chi Kuo suggested earlier in the year Apple may be developing a “small wireless charging mat,” said to be launching during the first half of 2020.
AirPower isn’t dead 👀
The project is back on, internally. No guarantee that they’ll finalize and release it, but they haven’t given up yet and they’re trying to re-engineer the coils to displace heat more effectively. Prototyping is underway.
