Apple reportedly launching AirPower and new AirPods wireless charging case in March
According to a tipster at American retailer Best Buy, Apple is preparing to launch the AirPower wireless charging mat and new AirPods wireless charging case in March, claiming that Best Buy will stock AirPower from day one online and in-store.
Our source reports Best Buy will begin receiving AirPower units in-store towards the end of March (likely the same time Apple begins retailing the accessory themselves), with Apple sending additional units to be used as store demos/displays. – Best Buy is an Apple Authorized Service Provider, and most stores offer a designated area specifically for Apple products.
AirPower is shown on Polish online retailer X-Kom’s website for 999 Złotych, with the company showing the product is currently “unavailable”. The retailer has been showing AirPower online since November, but is an indication that third-party stores will indeed have stock of the wireless charging accessory when it launches publicly.
Our tipster has claimed that Apple’s new charging case for AirPods will launch simultaneously with AirPower in March, however it’s believed Best Buy will only stock the case when sold with brand-new AirPods, hinting that the standalone wireless charging case will be available through Apple exclusively.
The Apple Post reported on Monday that Taiwanese website DigiTimes is claiming suppliers are “ready to enjoy sizeable orders from Apple” over the next couple of months following the release of Apple’s next-generation iPads, updated MacBook and a possible iPhone SE 2.
AirPower was first previewed alongside the unveiling of the iPhone X in September. Users will be able to charge up to three devices at once, including their Apple Watch Series 3, compatible Apple Watch charging case, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X on the wireless charging mat, with new products expected to gain wireless charging capabilities in the future. When users have multiple devices charging at the same time AirPower will ‘communicate’ between each device and intelligently decide on how much power each device requires.
Our tipster has asked to remain anonymous, and as with any leak/insider tip it’s difficult to determine the legitimacy of the claims submitted. That being said, with the prospect of new Apple hardware launching in March, and the fact AirPower is expected to launch within Q1 2018 the claims could indeed prove to be true.
