Apple has special tool to recover data from the new MacBook Pro’s non-removable SSD
With Apple’s decision to implement a non-removable SSD in new the MacBook Pro, its raised some questions on what happens to a users’s data when the computer fails. It turns out that not everything is lost. As discovered by iFitit in an initial tear down, there’s a mystery connector on the Mac’s logic board. At first it was just written off, but the connector does actually have a purpose.
The port gives a way for Apple to access data on a fried MacBook Pro. Retail stores have a tool designed specifically for the new MacBook Pro. According to sources familiar with the matter, this will assist customers that are still under warranty with an attempted data transfer.
Similar to Touch ID on iOS, the biometric sensor is attached to the logic board. This means that should one fail both will need to be replaced at the same time. If you’re still under warranties shouldn’t be an issue though as Apple will have the parts to calibrate Touch ID.
