Apple reportedly considered 16GB of RAM for iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo

Apple reportedly considered equipping the iPhone 18 Pro lineup and iPhone Duo with 16GB of RAM during development before settling on lower memory capacities for the finished devices.
The claim comes from leaker Instant Digital, who says Apple initially planned 16GB of RAM for the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone Duo. The leaker did not provide details on when the higher capacity was considered or why Apple changed its plans.
The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max have 12GB of RAM, according to information found through Xcode 27, matching the previous-generation Pro models. The iPhone Duo is also expected to include 12GB of RAM, although the Xcode data used to identify the Pro models’ memory did not include Apple’s foldable iPhone.
Previous supply chain reports had consistently pointed to 12GB of RAM for Apple’s 2026 flagship iPhones, making the claimed 16GB configuration appear to have been an earlier development target rather than a specification planned close to launch.
The claim also comes amid pressure on memory supply and pricing across the technology industry. Rising DRAM costs have reportedly affected Apple’s product planning, including discussions around pricing for the iPhone Duo.
Instant Digital has shared accurate information about some Apple products in the past but has a mixed record, so the claim should be treated cautiously. There is currently no independent evidence confirming that Apple planned to ship any of the devices with 16GB of RAM.
The amount of memory is particularly relevant to iPhone Duo because of its larger foldable display and multitasking features, which allow apps to run side by side. Apple has not publicly disclosed the RAM capacity of the device.
iPhone Duo pre-orders begin October 16 ahead of availability on October 23.
