iPhone Duo’s crease-hiding display layer can be replaced for $19 with AppleCare+

Apple has revealed that the protective layer sitting above the iPhone Duo’s foldable inner display is replaceable, giving customers a way to refresh the surface if it becomes worn or the display crease grows more noticeable over time.
Kate Bergeron, Apple’s vice president of hardware engineering, confirmed the detail in an interview with creator Angelica Siciliani Fendi, explaining that the nano-texture cover layer can be removed and replaced.
For customers in the United States with AppleCare+, Apple lists the service fee for replacing the iPhone Duo cover layer at $19. Apple has not yet disclosed the out-of-coverage replacement price.
The cover layer sits above the iPhone Duo’s flexible inner display and forms part of Apple’s effort to make the fold in the center less visible during normal use.
Bergeron said Apple put significant engineering work into making the layer last, but its replaceable design means wear to that upper surface does not necessarily require replacement of the entire foldable display assembly.
That distinction could prove particularly important on a foldable phone, where the inner display and its protective layers repeatedly bend every time the device is opened and closed.
Apple’s documentation indicates that the $19 AppleCare+ service is a cover-layer replacement rather than a complete inner-display repair.
Although the layer itself can physically be removed, Apple’s service information points toward replacement being handled through Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider rather than treated as a customer-installable screen protector.
iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the United States and £1,999 in the United Kingdom, with pre-orders opening October 16 before the device reaches customers on October 23.
The ability to replace only the upper layer provides another indication of how Apple has approached repairability on its first foldable iPhone, where damage or wear to the flexible display has been one of the biggest long-term concerns surrounding foldable devices.
Apple has not yet published a price for customers who need the cover layer replaced without AppleCare+, so the full cost of the service outside Apple’s coverage remains unknown.
