Apple rumored to release new AirPods with cameras, mass production slated for 2026

Apple plans to release new AirPods with infrared (IR) cameras designed to enhance spatial experiences with the Vision Pro headset, according to well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
In a recent Medium post, Kuo disclosed that Apple aims to begin mass production of these AirPods, which will include built-in IR camera modules, by 2026. These IR cameras are anticipated to work similarly to the Face ID sensors found in iPhones.
The integration of IR cameras into the AirPods is meant to improve the capabilities of Apple Vision Pro and future headsets, enhancing spatial computing and audio experiences. The IR cameras will be capable of detecting environmental changes, allowing for a wider range of gestures and better user interaction. For instance, if a user with the Apple Vision Pro and the new AirPods turns their head to look in a certain direction while watching a video, the audio from that direction could be heightened, enhancing the spatial audio experience.
Foxconn is expected to be the supplier of these new IR components, with the Taiwanese electronics giant set to supply parts for around 10 million AirPods in the initial phase.
