Apple to call new 2020 low-cost iPhone the “iPhone SE”, imminent launch expected
Apple will call its new 2020 low-cost iPhone the iPhone SE, according to a tip-off from a “highly trusted” reader, via 9to5Mac.
The source, who remains anonymous, dismisses claims of Apple’s new 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch budget iPhone models being called the “iPhone 9” and “iPhone 9 Plus”, saying the new models will be available in three finishes: White, Black and PRODUCT (Red), with three storage capacities: 64GB, 128GB and 256GB.
Apple’s new 2020 iPhone SE is expected to look almost identical to the iPhone 8, using Touch ID rather than Face ID and one single rear camera. The device is said to use modern internals such as the A13 processor, priced from $399.
The report claims Apple will launch five new protective cases for the device: two silicone cases, available in Black and White, and three leather cases, available in Red, Black and Midnight Blue. It is unknown whether Apple will also release a Smart Battery Case for the iPhone SE.
An imminent launch could suggest we could see the 2020 iPhone SE arriving as soon as tomorrow, April 3. This would collaborate with claims from Best Buy employees who started receiving third-party cases for the 4.7-inch 2020 iPhone in-store this week, with the instruction not to put them on shelves until Sunday, April 5.
Apple’s new 2020 iPhone SE would be the first major update to the SE line since its introduction in March 2016. The original iPhone SE, which Apple dropped from its line in 2018, featured the body of an iPhone 5S, marking the reintroduction of a 4-inch iPhone after Apple launched the larger 4.7-inch iPhone 6S, and 5.5-inch iPhone 6S Plus.
Today’s report notes that while they cannot guarantee the launch date, “Apple could reveal and begin taking orders for the new iPhone as soon as tomorrow.”
