Apple purchases UK-based company Spectral Edge to advance iPhone photography technology
It is not unknown that from time to time, Apple acquires smaller companies to help build up and secure their current technologies. It has been confirmed that Apple has bought a UK-based photography company named Spectral Edge, reports Bloomberg.
The companies website is now offline, but the company is famous for its mathematical technique for improving photographic imagery in real-time.
The company was created in 2014 from academic research at the University of East Anglia, Spectral Edge’s specially created algorithm is able to automatically enhance the low-light smartphone images, something that would be of great use to enhance Night Mode and other capabilities introduced with the iPhone 11 and onwards.
The technology captures an infrared shot and then blends it with a standard photo to make images more crisper and to improve colour accuracy. Bloomberg also suggests that Apple could use the Spectral Edge machine learning techniques to help further improve the quality of the photos taken on iPhone.
Peter Denwood, an Apple Corporate Lawyer, has been named as a director of Spectral Edge, according to the legal documents published by Apple, with other members being terminated from the company. There is no word on how much the tech giant paid for the company, and Apple did not respond to Bloomberg about the acquisition.
