Instagram and WhatsApp to be renamed to show Facebook ownership
Facebook, the owners of Instagram and WhatsApp, are renaming the two platforms to “be clearer about the products and services that are part of Facebook”.
Instagram and WhatsApp are two of the biggest names on the App Store, so the decision to rebrand the platforms isn’t one which is being taken lightly – so what, exactly, will the new names be?
Introducing “Instagram from Facebook,” and “WhatsApp from Facebook.” – Genius, right?
Speaking with The Information, a Facebook spokesperson said, “We want to be clearer about the products and services that are part of Facebook.”
The ‘from Facebook’ branding will be visible inside the apps—users will see it when they log on, for instance—and elsewhere, such as in app stores.
We very much doubt users will begin saying phrases such as “Message me on WhatsApp from Facebook,” or “Did you see that picture I uploaded to Instagram from Facebook.”, but the the renaming will inform users of the parent company behind the free-to-use services in light of a survey which noted less than half of WhatsApp users knew who owned the platform.
