Tests on the 2019 MacBook Air show 35% slower solid-state-drive
Recently, Apple refreshed its MacBook line with a cheaper new MacBook Air, and a brand new entry level MacBook Pro with Touch Bar, TouchID and more. However, in recent tests it appears the new MacBook Air has a much slower SSD (Solid State Drive) than its $100 extra predecessor.
The new MacBook was speed tested, and showed a write speed of 1.3GB/s and a read performance of 1GB/s. The same MacBook Air of the previous generation housed 2GB/s write speed and 0.9GB/s read performance.
Now this can be down to many reasons, however the biggest reason could be that to achieve the price cut that Apple has implemented with this new machine, they may have compromised with a cheaper SSD component. Some teardowns have also shown that the new component is Soldered into place rather than screwed like previous generations, which ultimately is a cheaper alternative.
All in all, most users will not notice this difference, and the lower price point appeals to more people, as that was one of the biggest criticisms of the newly updated MacBook Air when it first came out last year.
