Face ID to replace Touch ID on iPhone X
While many hoped that Apple would continue implementing Touch ID, it appears that Apple will be going with a different biometric technology instead. Face ID, previously known internally as Pearl ID, was discovered in the leaked iOS 11 GM (along with some other devices).
Setup for Face ID appears to be very similar to Touch ID. Users will still be asked to create a backup passcode/word (for when Face ID can’t function properly). In the first step, users are asked to gently move their heads “in a circle, while looking at the screen.” The instructions go on to explain that “Face ID performs better when all angles of your face are captured.” After running two full Face ID captures, the process is complete. Face ID will also add tips to help capture the best read possible. Code from the iOS 11 GM shows that the device will promote users to “Hold your iPhone 10 to 20 inches from your face” and “Tilt your head downwards/left/right/upwards”.
Many iOS users were and still are very fond of Touch ID, myself included, so it will be interesting to see how well the technology catches on. Let us know in the comments or on social media how you fell about the upcoming technology.
