Apple’s Shared Albums feature makes it easy to create an album in Photos that friends and family can view and contribute to, but deleting one has consequences that are worth understanding before tapping the button.
If you created a Shared Album, you can permanently delete it. Doing so removes the album from your devices and from the devices of everyone participating in it. Any photos and videos that haven’t been saved elsewhere can also be permanently lost.
Here’s everything you need to know before deleting an iCloud Shared Album from your iPhone or iPad.
What happens when you delete a Shared Album?
Deleting a Shared Album removes the album from all of your devices and from the devices of its participants.
If you’ve made the album available through a public link, that version of the album is removed from the web as well.
Most importantly, Apple warns that deleting a Shared Album permanently deletes the photos and videos contained within it. If there is anything in the album you want to keep, you should save it to your Photos library before deleting the album.
Photos and videos that you or another participant have already saved or downloaded into a personal Photos library aren’t deleted when the Shared Album disappears.
How to delete a Shared Album on iPhone or iPad
Open the Photos app and tap Collections.
Scroll down and select Shared Albums, then open the album you want to delete.
Tap the More button and select Delete Shared Album.
Tap Delete to confirm.
The album will then be removed from your devices and the devices of its participants.
Can you recover a deleted Shared Album?
Apple describes deletion of a Shared Album and the photos it contains as permanent, so you shouldn’t rely on being able to restore the album after confirming its deletion.
Before deleting an album, save any photos or videos you might want in the future to your own Photos library.
To save an individual item, open the photo or video, tap the Share button and select Save Image or Save Video.
What happens to photos I’ve already saved?
Nothing.
If you’ve previously saved a photo or video from the Shared Album into your own Photos library, that saved copy remains there after the Shared Album is deleted.
This also applies to other participants. Deleting your Shared Album won’t remove copies that somebody has already saved to their own Photos library.
Can other people delete my Shared Album?
The creator controls the Shared Album and can delete it.
Participants can remove photos and videos that they personally contributed, while the album owner has broader control over content within the album.
iOS 27 also introduces expanded participant permissions, including the ability for the organizer to let another participant manage the album and photos. You should therefore check participant permissions if you’ve given somebody additional management access.
Can I remove someone without deleting the album?
Yes. If you simply don’t want a particular person to have access anymore, you don’t need to delete the entire Shared Album.
Open the Shared Album, tap Manage Shared Album, select the participant and choose Remove Participant.
The album can continue to be shared with everyone else.
Can I leave a Shared Album instead of deleting it?
Yes, if somebody else created the album.
Participants can leave a Shared Album, which removes it from their own device without deleting the album for everyone else.
In Photos, open Collections, select Shared Albums, open the album, tap the More button and choose Leave Shared Album.
If you’re the creator, you’ll instead see the option to delete the Shared Album.
Can I delete a Shared Album from iCloud.com?
Yes.
Sign in to iCloud.com and open Photos, then select Shared Albums from the sidebar.
Find the album, open its More menu and choose Manage Shared Album, followed by Delete Shared Album.
Deleting it through iCloud.com has the same effect as deleting it from your iPhone or iPad. The album disappears from your devices and the devices of participants.
What are temporary Shared Albums in iOS 27?
With iOS 27, Apple has introduced the option to make a Shared Album temporary.
Rather than deleting an album immediately, you can choose Make Album Temporary, which schedules it to be deleted after 30 days.
This can be particularly useful for albums created for vacations, weddings, parties or other events where you only need a shared space for a limited period.
Apple warns that photos and videos in a temporary album that haven’t been saved to a Photos library will be deleted when the album expires.
Is a Shared Album the same as an iCloud Shared Photo Library?
No, and the distinction is important.
Shared Albums are individual albums designed for sharing selected photos and videos with other people.
iCloud Shared Photo Library is a separate feature that allows a group of people to contribute to and use a shared photo library alongside their personal libraries.
Deleting an iCloud Shared Photo Library therefore works differently and gives the creator and participants options for retaining content in their personal libraries. Don’t follow Shared Album deletion instructions if what you’re actually trying to remove is an iCloud Shared Photo Library.
Should I save everything before deleting a Shared Album?
If there’s anything in the Shared Album that you might want later, yes.
Apple specifically warns that deleting a Shared Album permanently removes its photos. Saving the images and videos you want to keep to your Photos library before deleting the album is the safest approach.
Once you’ve checked that everything important is safely stored in your library, you can delete the Shared Album knowing that those saved copies will remain.
