Apple’s 2026 iPhone lineup presents buyers with a choice the company has never offered before. You can buy the familiar flagship iPhone 18 Pro, or wait a little longer and spend considerably more on Apple’s first foldable, iPhone Duo.
They share Apple’s A20 Pro chip, but the similarities quickly end. iPhone 18 Pro is the conventional choice, built around Apple’s most advanced camera system and a familiar one-screen design. iPhone Duo is something completely different, with a compact outer display that opens to reveal the largest screen Apple has ever put on an iPhone.
Choosing between them therefore comes down to much more than specifications.
iPhone 18 Pro is the better choice for cameras
Photography is one of the biggest reasons to choose iPhone 18 Pro.
Apple has given iPhone 18 Pro its first variable-aperture 48MP Fusion Main camera, using six physical blades to change the aperture depending on the shot. The system gives photographers more control over depth of field while helping the camera adapt to different lighting conditions.
Apple has also added manual Pro camera controls for aperture, shutter speed and white balance, alongside other photography and video improvements.

iPhone Duo takes a different approach. Its folding design leaves less room for an elaborate Pro camera system, so Apple has equipped it with two 48MP rear cameras covering Main and Ultra Wide.

iPhone Duo gives you a much bigger display
This is where iPhone Duo fights back.
Closed, the foldable has a 5.4-inch outer display that works much like a compact conventional iPhone. Open it and you get a 7.6-inch folding display with around 50% more screen area than iPhone 18 Pro Max.
That larger canvas is not just there for watching videos. Apple has redesigned parts of iOS specifically to make use of it.
Split View brings side-by-side multitasking to iPhone for the first time, allowing two different apps to appear together or two windows from the same app to be open simultaneously. Frequently used combinations can also be saved as app pairs.

Apple is even bringing stylus support to the iPhone. iPhone Duo will support Apple Pencil with USB-C through a software update later this year.
For someone who wants their iPhone to double as a small tablet, there really is no comparison. iPhone Duo can do things iPhone 18 Pro simply cannot.
Touch ID or Face ID?
There is another fundamental difference you will notice every time you unlock the phone.
iPhone 18 Pro continues to use Face ID, while iPhone Duo brings Touch ID back to Apple’s flagship iPhone lineup.
Rather than placing a fingerprint sensor underneath the folding display, Apple has integrated Touch ID into iPhone Duo’s side button. That allows the same sensor to work whether the phone is open or closed.
For long-time iPhone users accustomed to Face ID, moving back to fingerprint authentication could take some adjustment. Others may see the return of Touch ID as an advantage.
Both use the A20 Pro, but the hardware is very different
Whichever phone you choose, you are getting Apple’s latest silicon.
The A20 Pro is Apple’s first iPhone chip manufactured using a 2nm process, bringing improvements to CPU, GPU and AI performance alongside better efficiency.
The way the two phones use that performance is different, though.
iPhone 18 Pro pairs A20 Pro with an upgraded vapor chamber designed to maintain high performance for longer during gaming, video editing and other intensive workloads.
On iPhone Duo, that processing power has another job to do. The phone needs to handle its much larger folding display, simultaneous apps and the additional multitasking capabilities Apple has developed specifically for the device.
So while the chip name is the same, these are two very different pieces of hardware built around it.
There is an $800 price difference
Price could settle this comparison before anything else does.
iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 in the United States with 256GB of storage.
That is an $800 difference before considering higher storage configurations.
Both phones are available with 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB of storage, but iPhone Duo sits in an entirely different price category from Apple’s conventional Pro lineup.
You are not paying $800 more for a better version of iPhone 18 Pro. You are paying for the folding display, hinge, second screen and the entirely different ways the hardware can be used.
That distinction is important because iPhone Duo is not automatically the better phone simply because it costs more.

The two phones are not launching together either.
iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max pre-orders open at 5 a.m. Pacific Time on Saturday, September 12, with both models arriving Friday, September 18.
iPhone Duo buyers have another month to wait.
iPhone Duo pre-orders open October 16 before the foldable launches October 23.
There is a software difference too. While iPhone 18 Pro will launch with iOS 27, iPhone Duo will arrive running iOS 27.1, giving Apple additional time to finish software designed specifically around the folding hardware.
Which should you buy?
For most people choosing between the two, iPhone 18 Pro is going to make more sense.
It costs $800 less, has Apple’s more capable camera system, retains Face ID and still delivers the A20 Pro chip, improved battery life, a smaller Dynamic Island and substantially better sustained performance.
Choose iPhone 18 Pro if photography, video, battery life and a conventional phone design matter most. It is also the obvious choice if you simply want Apple’s best traditional iPhone rather than experimenting with an entirely new form factor.
iPhone Duo is for a different kind of buyer.
The reason to spend $1,999 is the 7.6-inch folding display and everything that comes with it. Split View, app pairs, two windows from the same app, Apple Pencil support and the ability to turn a compact phone into something closer to a small iPad are capabilities the iPhone 18 Pro cannot match.

Ultimately, iPhone Duo should not be thought of as an iPhone 18 Pro upgrade. It is an alternative to it.
If you want the best conventional iPhone Apple makes, buy iPhone 18 Pro. If you have been waiting for an iPhone that can genuinely replace some of the things you would normally reach for an iPad to do, iPhone Duo is the more interesting choice.
