Apple adds digital key sharing with iOS 16.1
Apple has released iOS 16.1 today, bringing Live Activities to third-party apps, iCloud Shared Photo Library support, Clean Energy Charging in the US, and more. With the update, Apple is adding digital key sharing, allowing users to share access to car, hotel room, and other keys in the Wallet app using messaging apps like Messages and WhatsApp.
Announced earlier this year, digital key sharing in iOS 16.1 makes it easy to give friends and family access to digital keys. For example, when staying in a hotel, a digital key can be shared to others staying in the same room, allowing all guests access to the room using one shared digital key.
Digital keys are stored securely in the Wallet app on iPhone, with the owner of the key able to grant access by sending the digital key through Messages, or a third-party app such as WhatsApp.
