3rd-generation Apple TV is officially dead
After pulling the set-top box from their online store, Apple has all but sealed the fate for the 3rd-generation Apple TV. Similar to older iPhones, the link to the media device now reroutes to the fourth-generation product page. 9to5Mac has also obtained an email from Apple confirming the decision.
Effective immediately, Apple TV (3rd generation), MD/199LL/A, has reached end of life and is now discontinued. The Apple Supply team is going to fulfill all shippable backlog.
Apple will continue to fulfill backlog orders, but that will be it. The Cupertino company is still selling refurbished models however. Apple TV 3 was released in 2012 and given a spec bump the next year. In 2015 Apple announced the fourth-generation Apple TV which included support for Siri, the App Store, and debuted tvOS.
The fourth-generation Apple TV can be purchased from Apple’s online and retail stores in two configurations: 32GB and 64GB costing $149 or $199 respectively.
