Apple makes macOS Sierra an Automatic Download beginning today
Similar to Microsoft and Windows 10, Apple is making macOS Sierra available as an automatic download to customers running OS X El Capitan. The move is meant to encourage users to update. These changes also go into effect today, but can be turned off if you so choose.
Customers who have auto downloads enabled in settings will start to see macOS Sierra start to download automatically. Although unlike Windows 10, the operating system will not begin to install without express permission. Apple is playing it smart as well. macOS Sierra will only automatically download to computers that meet the minimum specs requirements and have an adequate amount of storage space available. Should the download start to download and run out of space, the files will be deleted.
Of course if you’d rather opt out, you still have the option to do so. The feature can be turned off by going to System Preferences > App Store and unchecking “Download newly available updates in the background.” Users should see the updates automatically install over the next week.
