Will Apple hold an October 13 event for HomePad, or announce it with press releases?

Apple is reportedly preparing to introduce HomePad, HomePod mini 2, and a new Apple TV 4K on October 13, but one important question remains unanswered: will Apple hold another event, or simply announce the new products through press releases?
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that October 13 will mark the beginning of Apple’s major new push into the smart home, centered around its long-awaited HomePad smart home hub.
The date is reportedly also set to bring the first HomePod mini hardware update since 2020 and the first new Apple TV since 2022.
What the report doesn’t establish is how Apple plans to introduce them.

Apple hasn’t announced an October event, sent invitations, or added another presentation to its public calendar at the time of writing.
That leaves several possibilities open, including a traditional streamed Apple Event, a shorter prerecorded presentation, or a series of Apple Newsroom announcements published on October 13.
There is precedent for all of them.
Apple has repeatedly used October for major product announcements, but the company hasn’t consistently used a full event.
In October 2023, Apple held its “Scary Fast” event to unveil the M3 family of chips alongside new MacBook Pro and iMac models.
A year later, Apple took a very different approach. The company announced its M4 iMac on October 28, redesigned Mac mini on October 29, and M4 MacBook Pro on October 30 through a series of individual announcements rather than a conventional keynote.
Apple also introduced the seventh-generation iPad mini through a press release on October 15, 2024.
That history means the number of products alone doesn’t tell us whether Apple believes an event is necessary.
HomePod mini 2 and the next Apple TV 4K could both comfortably be announced through Apple Newsroom.
Both are expected to retain designs broadly similar to the products they replace, with much of their appeal coming from faster internal hardware, improved connectivity, and support for Apple’s latest Siri technology.
HomePad is different.
Apple’s new smart home hub is reportedly an entirely new product category, combining a roughly seven-inch touchscreen, speaker, camera, Home controls, FaceTime, Apple services, and Siri AI.
It is also expected to introduce a new interface and a different way of interacting with Siri around the home.
That creates considerably more for Apple to explain than a conventional processor upgrade.
Apple could use a presentation to demonstrate how HomePad recognizes different members of a household, how Siri AI accesses personal context, how the device controls smart home accessories, and how it fits alongside HomePod mini and Apple TV.
The fact that all three products are reportedly arriving on the same date strengthens the case for Apple presenting them together as a broader smart home story rather than treating them as unrelated hardware updates.
Apple’s own launch history, however, means that still doesn’t guarantee a traditional event.
When Apple held its October 18 “Unleashed” event in 2021, it announced the presentation six days earlier. The October 30, 2023 “Scary Fast” event was also announced six days in advance.
If Apple followed a similar pattern this year, an October 13 event could potentially be announced around October 7.
The Apple Post has previously looked at Apple’s history of October events, noting that HomePad could be the product most likely to justify another presentation this year.
Today’s report makes that question considerably more interesting because we now have a specific date and a group of three related Home products reportedly arriving together.
For now, October 13 appears to be the date to watch for Apple’s new smart home lineup. Whether that means another Apple Event or a morning of Apple Newsroom announcements remains unknown.
