Sketchy report claims Apple has abandoned second-generation iPhone Duo

A questionable new report claims Apple has abandoned development of the second-generation iPhone Duo because of alleged display durability and reliability problems with the first-generation model, although there is currently no credible evidence corroborating the claim.

Apple leaker Majin Bu claimed on X that information from the supply chain suggests Apple has cancelled development of its second foldable iPhone. The source alleges that issues involving the durability and long-term reliability of the first-generation iPhone Duo’s folding display have not been effectively resolved.

The claim should be treated with considerable caution. No other established source has independently reported that Apple has cancelled the second-generation iPhone Duo, and existing reporting continues to point toward another model being planned for 2027.

The timing also makes the claim particularly difficult to assess. Apple’s first iPhone Duo does not reach customers until October 23, meaning there is not yet any real-world, long-term customer data showing how its folding display or hinge performs over an extended period.

Apple, meanwhile, has publicly emphasized the durability of the first-generation device. The company says the iPhone Duo uses a multi-layer folding display structure with custom adhesives designed to reduce stress as the screen folds, alongside high-strength glass, a titanium plate and a custom polymer cover.

In an interview following the device’s unveiling, Apple’s Vice President of Hardware Engineering Tom Marieb also discussed the work that went into the iPhone Duo’s hinge, describing durability as a major focus during development.

None of that rules out Apple encountering engineering challenges with future iPhone Duo hardware, particularly given the complexity of foldable displays. It does, however, mean the latest cancellation claim currently sits at odds with Apple’s public confidence in the first-generation device and earlier reports about its future roadmap.

The Apple Post reported last week on an earlier claim from Majin Bu that Apple could launch the iPhone Duo 2 as early as spring 2027. At the time, the source put the likelihood of that timing at “80%.”

That earlier report was itself treated cautiously because launching a successor only months after the original $1,999 iPhone Duo would represent an unusually short product cycle.

Majin Bu has correctly reported some Apple details in the past, including the iPhone Duo name shortly before Apple unveiled the device. The source also has a mixed overall track record, with other claims failing to materialize or proving only partially accurate.

For now, there is no independent confirmation that Apple has abandoned the second-generation iPhone Duo, and the claim is best viewed as an unverified supply-chain rumor rather than an established change to Apple’s product roadmap.

Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo on September 9, with pre-orders beginning October 16 ahead of its October 23 release.
