Apple gives iOS 28 engineers more time to develop new features

Breaking News Apple is changing how it builds iOS 28, giving software engineers more time to explore and develop features before they have to integrate them into the operating system, according to a new report.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports in his Power On newsletter that Apple adjusted the first of three major development milestones for its next-generation operating systems, including iOS 28, iPadOS 28 and macOS 28. Engineers reportedly welcomed the change because it allowed more time to develop and test ideas before committing to them.
Apple normally divides each eight-week milestone into four weeks of coding and four weeks of what it calls convergence, when features are integrated into the wider software. For the first iOS 28 milestone, that balance reportedly shifted to six weeks of coding and exploration followed by two weeks of integration.
The extra time does not mean Apple has added two weeks to its overall development schedule. Instead, it is using more of the existing period for building features and less for combining them into a working version of the software. The change has so far been reported for the first milestone, rather than confirmed as a permanent approach for every stage.
For iPhone users, the potential benefit is better-developed features by the time iOS 28 arrives. Giving engineers longer to explore ideas could help Apple refine more ambitious changes before they are locked into the operating system. However, a shorter integration period could also create challenges, and the report does not establish that the final update will contain more features or fewer bugs.
The revised process comes as Apple considers a more ambitious future for Siri AI. Bloomberg has also reported that Apple is exploring an agent-style Siri capable of pursuing tasks on a user’s behalf. That is a separate development effort, and there is no confirmation that the change in engineering schedules will bring such a feature to iOS 28.
Apple has yet to reveal the new features planned for iOS 28. Based on its established annual schedule, the update is expected to be previewed at WWDC in June 2027 and released publicly around September.
