Why does iPhone Duo use Touch ID instead of Face ID?

iPhone Duo brings Touch ID back to a flagship iPhone, placing the fingerprint sensor in the side button instead of using Face ID for authentication.
The change is closely tied to the foldable’s unusually thin design. Face ID requires a collection of TrueDepth camera components, while a side-mounted fingerprint sensor allows Apple to authenticate users without dedicating the same internal and display space to that system.
Touch ID works whether iPhone Duo is folded or open, so the same side button can unlock the device in either configuration. It can also be used for authentication when making purchases and accessing protected information.
Does iPhone Duo have Face ID as well?
No. iPhone Duo uses Touch ID rather than offering both biometric systems. That makes it a notable departure from Apple’s other modern flagship iPhones, where Face ID has been standard for years.
The decision illustrates one of the engineering trade-offs involved in creating Apple’s first foldable. The Duo gains an exceptionally thin folding body and large inner display, but Apple has changed a familiar part of the flagship iPhone experience to make the form factor work.
