Apple gives iPad mini a new ‘Acoustic Display’ audio system

Apple has introduced a new audio system called Acoustic Display with the latest iPad mini, using components integrated around the display to improve sound without adding visible speaker hardware.

The system pairs specially designed woofers through the display to produce stronger bass and greater volume, while custom tweeters are hidden between the glass and aluminum enclosure to improve high frequencies.

Apple says the sealed Acoustic Display enclosure also helps the new iPad mini achieve its IP67 rating for water and dust resistance.

The new setup is designed to improve audio for gaming, video playback, and content creation on the compact tablet.

Acoustic Display is one of several less obvious changes in the new iPad mini, alongside its larger OLED screen, A20 Pro chip, and redesigned body.

Apple detailed the new audio system in its official announcement.
