Is the new iPad mini waterproof? Here’s what its IP67 rating means

The new iPad mini is the first model in the lineup to arrive with an IP67 rating for splash, water, and dust resistance, giving the compact tablet considerably more protection against the elements.

IP67 means Apple has tested the new iPad mini under controlled laboratory conditions for immersion in water up to a maximum depth of 1 meter for up to 30 minutes.

That does not make the iPad mini waterproof. Apple says splash, water, and dust resistance are not permanent conditions and can decrease as the device experiences normal wear.

Can you use the new iPad mini around water?

The IP67 rating should provide extra reassurance for situations such as using the iPad mini outdoors in the rain or near a pool, but it is still designed to resist accidental exposure rather than deliberate or prolonged immersion.

Apple also warns users not to charge a wet iPad and says liquid damage is not covered under warranty.

The new protection is part of a wider redesign for the all-new iPad mini, which also introduces an OLED display, A20 Pro chip, and a thinner 5.4 mm body.

Apple outlines the water-resistance limits in the footnotes to its official iPad mini announcement.
