Apple is limiting iPhone Duo purchases in the United States to a maximum of two devices per customer, adding a new restriction as demand for the company’s first foldable iPhone continues to outstrip supply.
MacRumors reports that customers attempting to add more than two iPhone Duo units through Apple’s website or the Apple Store app are now shown a message requiring them to reduce the quantity before checkout.
Apple does not currently advertise the two-device limit prominently on its U.S. iPhone Duo pages, and it is not clear exactly when the restriction was introduced. Some customers say they were previously able to order more than two devices when pre-orders opened on October 16, while others report that a two-device cap was already being enforced.
The restriction arrives against the backdrop of extremely tight iPhone Duo availability. Apple has described demand for iPhone Duo as “nothing short of extraordinary”, after launch-day availability disappeared within minutes and estimated delivery dates moved into 2027.
Apple has not said that the U.S. order limit is specifically intended to curb reselling, so that should not be assumed. However, the timing is notable after early iPhone Duo units began appearing on resale sites at substantial premiums. One 2TB iPhone Duo was reportedly resold on eBay for as much as $5,000, compared with Apple’s $3,199 U.S. retail price for that configuration.
Two-per-customer purchase limits have also been listed in markets including China, Singapore and Hong Kong, according to MacRumors. In the United States, the restriction appears to become visible only when a customer tries to place more than two devices in an order.
The tighter purchase rules come as Apple continues working through one of its most constrained iPhone launches in years. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has argued that Apple made a “major mistake” by opening iPhone Duo pre-orders before more inventory was ready, while Apple has said it is working to get devices to customers as quickly as possible.
There are some signs that availability could improve for certain buyers. Some iPhone Duo customers have recently seen their delivery estimates move forward, although Apple is still showing lengthy waits for many new orders.
iPhone Duo launches on Friday, October 23, with prices starting at $1,999 in the United States and £1,999 in the United Kingdom. Customers hoping to buy one at launch may also face limited retail availability, with Apple Store staff reportedly warning some customers not to expect walk-in stock.
