Apple Stores preparing massive iPhone Duo demo rollout for launch day

Apple is reportedly preparing an unusually large in-store showcase for iPhone Duo, with flagship locations receiving dozens or even more than 100 demonstration devices as the company prepares for the foldable iPhone’s October 23 launch.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple’s Fifth Avenue flagship in New York is expected to receive more than 150 iPhone Duo units for demonstrations and displays, while the Apple Park Visitor Center will have close to 100.
Most non-flagship stores are expected to receive around 20 demonstration units on average, with prominent stores including Michigan Avenue in Chicago, The Grove in Los Angeles and Apple Upper West Side in Manhattan reportedly receiving roughly 30 to 40 each.
Apple wants customers to experience the foldable design in person
The retail setup will go beyond simply placing iPhone Duo on standard display tables. Bloomberg says most stores will add an additional spotlight table, while Apple has created a fixture designed to demonstrate how the device folds and unfolds.
Customers will also be able to try StandBy on untethered iPhone Duo units in Avenue areas around stores. A separate MagSafe display stand has reportedly been designed to hold an open iPhone Duo alongside two conventional iPhones for direct comparison.
The size of the rollout suggests Apple sees hands-on demonstrations as particularly important for its first foldable. Unlike a conventional annual iPhone update, iPhone Duo introduces a different form factor that customers may want to handle before deciding whether to buy.
Apple has confirmed iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the United States and £1,999 in the United Kingdom, with pre-orders opening October 16 before the October 23 retail launch.
The extensive demo inventory contrasts with tighter stock for customers. Bloomberg reports that Apple has accumulated enough sellable devices to keep the October launch on schedule, but availability is still expected to be constrained.
Apple Stores are also adapting their wireless Presto systems for iPhone Duo, allowing software to be updated while devices remain boxed and supporting the personalized first-start greeting already planned for U.S. retail buyers.
