Apple is still developing its own home security camera for launch next year, with the device remaining separate from the range of LG-made smart home accessories Apple has reportedly helped develop.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman clarified that Apple’s own privacy-focused camera and sensor remains planned for 2027 following reports about a separate lineup of LG-branded cameras, a video doorbell, smart lock and other home accessories.
The distinction is important because The Apple Post reported that Apple has been working with LG on a range of smart home products. Those devices will be manufactured and sold under the LG brand, despite Apple reportedly helping with their development.
Apple’s own device is expected to take a very different approach. Bloomberg previously reported that Apple’s camera will not be designed to record video, instead using artificial intelligence to analyze activity around the home.
The device, internally known as J450, is reportedly designed to recognize people and understand which room someone is in. Facial recognition and infrared sensors could allow it to identify household members and pets, with that information potentially used for security and home automation.
Apple could use the sensor to trigger personalized actions around the home, such as changing music or other settings depending on who enters a room, or turning off lights when a room becomes empty.
The privacy-focused approach would make Apple’s hardware substantially different from conventional home security cameras that primarily record footage for users to watch live or review later. How Apple would handle situations where customers need recorded evidence after a security incident remains unclear.
The camera is expected to form part of a wider Apple home security push. Bloomberg has also reported that Apple is developing a home security and monitoring service for 2027, potentially combining dedicated hardware, AI and the company’s Home ecosystem.
The LG products and Apple’s own camera are therefore expected to coexist rather than one replacing the other. LG’s lineup includes more traditional indoor and outdoor security cameras, while Apple’s J450 device appears focused on private environmental awareness and intelligent automation.
