One of the most important components inside Apple’s $1,999 iPhone Duo may also be one of its most expensive, with a new supply-chain claim suggesting Samsung charges Apple around $250 for each folding display panel.
According to a claim attributed to leaker Instant Digital, Samsung’s display division has secured a three-year agreement to supply folding panels for iPhone Duo and future models covered by the arrangement.
The reported $250 figure applies to each folding panel and does not include assembly or testing costs. It is also understood to refer to the internal folding screen rather than iPhone Duo’s separate outer display.
Samsung has a powerful position
Samsung was already widely reported to be Apple’s exclusive supplier for the iPhone Duo folding display. Other potential suppliers have reportedly been unable to meet Apple’s requirements at the necessary scale and quality, giving Samsung considerable leverage.
For comparison, conventional premium iPhone display panels have previously been reported at substantially lower prices. A folding OLED is considerably more complex, however, needing to survive repeated movement while maintaining image quality and working with the hinge design.
At $250, the folding display alone would equal roughly one eighth of iPhone Duo’s $1,999 retail starting price. That comparison does not represent Apple’s profit margin, since the retail price also has to account for every other component, manufacturing, logistics, software development and other costs.
The deal could extend beyond the first iPhone Duo
The reported three-year duration is particularly interesting because it would give Samsung a role in multiple generations of Apple’s foldable hardware if the claim proves accurate.
Apple is expected to ship millions of iPhone Duo units, with one recent forecast suggesting the company could capture nearly 25% of the foldable smartphone market during 2026.
