iPhone users on EE in the UK may notice a new 5G+ indicator appearing in the status bar after updating to iOS 27, showing when the carrier’s newer 5G Standalone network is available.
The 5G+ symbol appears in place of the usual 5G indicator at the top of the iPhone display when EE’s enhanced network is available. Apple explains that the 5G+ status icon can appear when a carrier offers an enhanced version of its 5G network.
For EE customers, 5G+ is the name used for the carrier’s 5G Standalone network. Unlike the first generation of 5G in the UK, which continued to rely on parts of the existing 4G network, 5G Standalone uses 5G technology end-to-end.
EE says its 5G+ network can provide faster download and upload speeds, improved performance in crowded areas, better video calling and gaming experiences, enhanced security and improved power efficiency.
The carrier says 5G+ is now available in more than 550 towns and cities across the UK. Availability still depends on location, device, SIM and plan, meaning iPhone users may see the status bar switch between 5G and 5G+ as they move between coverage areas.
EE currently lists the iPhone 15 series, iPhone 16 series, iPhone 17 series and iPhone Air among its compatible 5G+ smartphones. Customers also need an eligible EE plan and compatible SIM or eSIM to use the network.
On compatible iPhones, users can check their settings by opening Settings, selecting Mobile Service, choosing Mobile Data Options and then Voice & Data. EE recommends enabling 5G Auto, 5G Standalone and Voice Over 5G where the options are available.
The addition makes it easier for EE customers to tell when the more advanced network is available without opening Settings or using a separate network diagnostic tool. If 5G+ disappears and the regular 5G symbol returns, the iPhone can continue using EE’s standard 5G network.
