Tim Cook shares ‘50 Years of Thinking Different’ letter as Apple celebrates its anniversary today

Apple CEO Tim Cook has shared a new letter titled “50 Years of Thinking Different” as the company celebrates its 50th anniversary today.
The letter was sent to employees and reflects on Apple’s history, the people who use its products, and the company’s impact over the past five decades.
Cook opened the letter by looking back at Apple’s beginnings in 1976, when the company was founded in a small garage with the belief that technology should be personal.
“Fifty years ago in a small garage, a big idea was born,” Cook wrote. “Apple was founded on the simple notion that technology should be personal, and that belief — radical at the time — changed everything.”
Cook went on to reference some of Apple’s most important products and services, including the Mac, iPod, iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, AirPods, the App Store, Apple Music, Apple Pay, iCloud, and Apple TV. He said Apple’s mission has always been centered around giving people tools that help them create, connect, and express themselves.
Throughout the letter, Cook emphasized that Apple’s greatest achievements are not just the products themselves, but what people do with them. He highlighted how Apple devices have helped users launch businesses, capture important moments, reconnect with loved ones, and improve lives.
“In your hands, the tools we make have improved lives, and sometimes even saved them,” Cook wrote. “And that is what inspires us — not what technology can do alone, but everything you can do with it.”
Cook also thanked Apple employees, developers, and customers for helping shape the company over the last 50 years, while stressing that Apple remains focused on the future rather than looking back.
The letter ends with a reference to Apple’s famous “Think Different” campaign, with Cook writing: “So here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently.”
